Adrian E. Flatt, M.D., Hand Collection The Adrian E.
Flatt, M.D., Hand Collection is on display at Baylor University Medical
Center at Dallas in the George W. Truett Memorial Hospital lobby. The
display is open and free to the public 24-hours a day. This exhibit of more
than 100 cast, bronze-coated hands is the work of Adrian Flatt, M.D., who
was chief of orthopedic surgery at Baylor Dallas from 1982 until 1992. A
native of England, Dr. Flatt came to the United States in 1954. Dr. Flatt
served as consultant in hand surgery to several organizations and
individuals, including the United States Air Force and the United States
Space Program. Dr. Flatt was professor of anatomy and hand surgery at the
University of Iowa for 22 years, and taught hand surgery at Yale University
School of Medicine for three years before coming to Dallas in 1982. Dr.
Flatt began in 1962, as a hobby, casting and bronze-coating hands of
well-known individuals in various professions. The first hands he cast were
those of fellow surgeons to prove there are no typical surgeons hands. Not
only did he prove that, but his collection shows how expressive and
revealing an individuals hands can be. Since his retirement in 1992, Dr.
Flatt continues to teach anatomy and hand surgery to medical students in the
residency program at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas
Below are some of the favorite bronze (and some plaster) casts photographed
during a visit to Baylor Medical Center several years ago. I haven't seen too
many photos on the Internet of this collection so here is a view of the
wonderful hands:
